Exploring your career

There are a lot of changes in the world of work, with new jobs constantly created locally and nationally.

When it comes to the type of career and job choice, it is all about you, no-one can make that decision for you. We have listed a couple of questions below to think about and try and answer when considering what your future looks like.

  1. What am I good at? (think about your abilities, strengths, qualifications, skills)
  2. What interests me? (It could be a hobby you could turn into a career, so think carefully because you will need to be able to wake up early, work long hours and if it’s not interesting, you will get bored)
  3. Who will I be working with? (This is important, the environments you will be exposed too and the people you will work with will highly influence how much you love your career)
  4. What jobs and opportunities are currently available and what are the jobs of the future? (Will you job evolve? There are roles that are being replaced by systems and/or robots! so, is your career future-proof?)
  5. Will your chosen career require further study? (Will you be willing to do further studies? think about your preferred learning styles, can you work study extra hours after work…)
  6. When will I be working? (think about the work patterns e.g. shifts, evening, weekends)
  7. Where will I be working? (Think about whether the career you want is available locally or are you prepared to travel)
  8. Why is the job right for you? (find out about the main duties, entry requirements and career prospects)

There are so many different careers out there, but you have probably only heard of a few. Often people find it difficult to choose a career because they just haven’t heard of the ones that may be an ideal match for them. You can find out about them by doing some career research.
